This blogpost is about Neptune and its pyschological significance in astrology, as well as the neptunian person - anyone with a strong or dominant influence of Neptune, Pisces and/or the 12th house.
Contrary to uranus, which represents freedom of physical and mental restrictions through rebellion, neptune goes beyond that.
Neptune is farther away from the sun and therefore describes an even broader, more subtle and less tangible psychological theme.
The planet farthest away from the sun, by the way, is pluto.
Neptune describes the freedom of transcendence.
It is not just the destruction of boundaries in the physical realm, it is the dissolution of the physical realm.
That is why neptune is also associated with death and the afterlife.
The ocean, being so formless and vast, is another important neptune theme.
The greek equivalent to neptune is Poseidon, god of the sea.
Since neptune represents everything that exceeds the physical realm, it deals with the astral plane and the Collective Unconscious, the world of dreams, fantasy and imagination.
People with strong neptune influences (or pisces or the 12th house) are very imaginative and creative.
In fact, they might spend more time in their imagination, than they focus on reality.
This is the negative influence of neptune; it also brings illusion, vagueness, haziness and romanticising. Things are not seen like they really are, they are usually idealized, seen through rose-tinted glasses.
This means that a neptunian person can tend towards only seeing that which they want to see, to be naive, gullible and easily manipulated.
Neptunians are easily taken advantage of or deceived.
Neptune is the transcendence of the physical, so their boundaries are dissoluted to the point of them trusting people blindly.
However, with these low boundaries between oneself and others, also comes great understanding and the ability for sympathy.
Neptunian people are often empaths, feeling whatever somebody else is feeling as their own feelings.
Being so receptive and finely tuned, they can also receive information from higher planes of being.
Neptunians are often spiritual, sometimes even psychic, but all of them can trust their guts, because their intuition is really strong.
Coming back to their need to be free of the material world, this is something that can be expressed very unhealthily in a Neptunian person.
They seek to free themselves, to go beyond the physical, to transcend.
What neptune ultimately seeks is ecstasy.
Ecstasy literally means "standing outside" - to leave the body and all other physical restrictions and interpersonal boundaries.
Neptunians are especially inclined towards astral travel - their soul leaving their body (after an accident for example, when you can look at the scene from outside), because they already are so unattached.
Without the pragmatic rebellion of uranus, neptune seeks freedom in different ways: escaping oneself, one's life and one's mind by reading, writing or imagining and dreaming of other worlds, watching shows and movies, playing video games or being immersed in other alternative realities, partying and losing oneself either in the crowds or in the dance, alcohol and all kinds of drugs.
All of these examples are unhealthy to a certain degree and all of them are a form of escapism, of running away from reality.
The zodiac sign pisces, ruled by neptune, actually opposes virgo in the zodiac wheel.
Virgo is the sign of health, the sign of cleanliness and innocence.
Neptune can seduce us to become heavily unbalanced, unhealthy and to give up reality for ecstasy.
It is also the power of unconditional empathy and love, of imagination, dreams and spiritual transcendence.
Thank you Marina. This article nearly at all describe me.
